What to do if You Forgot Your Apple Account Password

Resetting your Apple Account password is easiest to do with an iPhone already signed into your Apple ID and trusted. If you do not have a trusted device to reset the password on, you can still reset your password in other ways.



Reset Your Apple Account Password on Your iPhone

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap [Your Name] at the top of the main menu
  3. Tap the second option titled "Sign-In & Security"
  4. Tap on Change Password
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password.

You can also follow the iPhone steps on a trusted iPad, Apple Vision Pro, or Apple Watch.



Reset Your Apple Account Password on Your Mac

You can also reset your Apple Account password on a trusted Mac.

  1. Open the Apple menu
  2. Click on System Settings
  3. Click on [Your Name] at the top of the main menu on the left side panel
  4. Click on the second option titled "Sign-In & Security"
  5. Clck Change Password, then follow the onscreen instructions to reset your Apple Account password


Reset Password While Setting Up a New Device

If you're setting up a new Apple device and forgot your password, you can reset it during the setup process or skip Sign-In and reset it in Settings.

Reset Password During Setup

During the setup process, you will come to the Sign-In screen. Tap “Forgot password or don’t have an Apple Account?”, then look for a Forgot Apple Account or Password button or Reset Passowrd button.

You can reset your Apple Account password after the initial setup process in Settings on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac.

iPhone / iPad / iPod touch

  1. Open Settigs
  2. Tap "Sign-In to Your [Device]"
  3. Tap Forgot Password, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu
  2. Click on System Settings
  3. Click on "Sign-In to Your Mac" at the top of the main menu on the left side panel
  4. Click on Forgot Password, then follow the onscreen instructions.


Reset Your Apple Account Password through the Apple Support App on a Borrowed Device.

If you don’t have an Apple device but have access to your trusted phone number, you can borrow an Apple device from a friend or family member, or use one at an Apple Store or other tech stores such as Best Buy.

  1. Ask your friend to open the Apple Support app on their Apple device. If they need to download the Apple Support app, here is a direct link to the App Store listing of it: Apple Support - App Store
  2. Select the Support tab in the navigation bar if it isn't already selected.
  3. Tap on the Reset Password button under the Suppport Tools section.
  4. Tap "Help Someone Else"
  5. Enter your Apple Account email address or phone number.
  6. Tap Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password.


Reset Your Apple Account Password Online

If all the above options are unavailable, your last option is to reset your account password online. Note that this process may take longer and should be done as the last option since it will always try verification with your trusted devices when possible first.

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. go to iforgot.apple.com
  3. Click Reset Password
  4. Enter your Apple Account primary email address or phone number in the first field and the code you see in the image on the right in the second field (case sensitive) and click Continue.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password to a new secure password.
  6. Write down your new password somewhere safe that you will remember.

Any sensitive information entered while using this method is not stored on a borrowed device.
