Adjust the VoiceOver Speech and Language Settings on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Learn how to edit the VoiceOver speech settings.



Adjust the Speech Rate

You can adjust the rate at which items are spoken in Settings or with the rotor.



Adjust Speech Rate in Settings

You can adjust the overall VoiceOver speech rate on the main VoiceOver settings page or—if you use multiple voices and languages—you can adjust a specific voice's speaking rate by following the steps below:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap VoiceOver
  4. Tap Speech
  5. Tap the Voice you want to adjust the speech rate of.
  6. Slide the slider to the left or right to slow down or speed up the voice under Rate.

You can adjust other settings here for the voice such as the voice pitch.

Before you can adjust the speech rate of the VoiceOver voice using the rotor, the setting must be added to the rotor. Learn how to add items to the rotor here: Rotor for VoiceOver article >



Adjust the VoiceOver Speech Volume

The speech volume is adjusted with the volume buttons of your device; however, you can adjust the volume of the voice to be louder than media or quieter with media in the VoiceOver Speech settings.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap VoiceOver
  4. Tap Speech
  5. Tap the Voice you want to adjust the speech rate of.
  6. Slide the slider to the left or right to slow down or speed up the voice under Volume.

Add or Change the VoiceOver Speaking Voice

You can change the voice VoiceOver uses to speak items on the screen or add multiple voices to switch between with the Rotor



Change the Primary Voice

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap VoiceOver
  4. Tap Speech
  5. Tap the name of the current primary voice
  6. Tap the download button to download and select a voice from the voices list.


Add a Voice Option to the Rotor

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap VoiceOver
  4. Tap Speech
  5. Tap Add Rotor Voice
  6. Tap the download button to download and select a voice from the voices list.

Add Languages to the Rotor

If you know multiple languages and you want VoiceOver to use a dedicated voice when speaking in specific languages, you can add languages and voices for those languages to VoiceOver and the rotor.

To change the VoiceOver primary language, you must change the device primary language in Settings > General > Language & Region.



Setup Automatic Language Switching

VoiceOver can automatically detect and switch to the correct language based on text it is reading to you.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap VoiceOver
  4. Tap Speech
  5. Enable Detect Lannguages


VoiceOver Verbosity

Choose what content VoiceOver speaks.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap Verbosity
  4. Adjust the various settings to control what VoiceOver speaks
