Adjust the TalkBack Speech and Language Settings on Android

Learn how to edit the TalkBack speech settings.


TalkBack Voice

Change the voice TalkBack uses, set the speech rate, and pitch.

Open the TalkBack Menu and navigate to TalkBack Settings or follow the steps below to open:


Voice

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility
  3. Tap TalkBack
  4. Tap Settings
  5. Tap Text-to-Speech Settings
  6. Ensure Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google is selected under Preferred Engine
  7. Tap the gear next to the Preferred Engine
  8. Tap Install Voice Data
  9. Select a country for a language
  10. Tap Download
  11. Tap a voice to hear a sample of it and select it

Speech Rate and Pitch

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility
  3. Tap TalkBack
  4. Tap Settings
  5. Tap Text-to-Speech Settings
  6. Adjust the sliders near the bottom of the page for speech rate and pitch
  7. You can play a sample of the speech with your set rate and pitch or reset the settings at the very bottom

Verbosity

Choose what content TalkBack speaks

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility
  3. Tap TalkBack
  4. Tap Settings
  5. Tap Verbosity
  6. Toggle the options to customize what TalkBack speaks
